What is counselling?
Counselling is a safe and confidential space where you can explore your thoughts, feelings and behaviours with an empathetic, non-judgmental qualified counsellor. Over time the counsellor will help you see your life from a different perspective. For some this will help identify changes that need to be made and for others it will help them accept and move on from certain situations or emotional states. It’s not often in life someone truly listens. Counselling is a special environment which gives us support in life when we need it most.
What’s the difference between Counselling and Psychotherapy?
There is no commonality agreed definition to identify the differences between Counselling and Psychotherapy. Some may say there is little difference whilst others may say psychotherapists work more long term and deeper with clients.
So how do I pick a counsellor?
Like with clients, each counsellor is different and may have different approaches, training and experiences. The best advice I can give you is to look around for a counsellor that suits you. One size doesn’t fit all, so if I’m not your cup of tea then check out the Counselling Directory for other counsellors.
What's the first step?
If you want to give it a try, why not give me a call or send me an email so that I can answer any other questions you may have and then we can arrange a session. The initial assessment session will be a bit different to other sessions as this will be for us to meet and get to know each other, work through any questions you may have and also discuss your expectations for the counselling. During the session I will also ask you for information on what has brought you to counselling and some other questions to help me identify the most appropriate way for us to work together. Hopefully by the end of the session you will have a good sense of if counselling is for you and if you want to proceed at Stick and Stones.
How long are the sessions?
The sessions last 50 minutes although double sessions can be booked if required.
How many sessions will I need?
There isn’t a formula to work from as this depends on your needs and our availability. Some may only come for short-term counselling, others for 12 sessions, and some for over a year. It depends on you and what you want. Every 4 - 6 sessions we will have a review to check our progress.
What is your availability?
This is subject to change so please give me a call to discuss. Once we have arranged a time and date for our sessions then this will be the same each week, however I can be flexible if necessary.
